Joseph F. Tumulty

Joseph Francis Tumulty passed away on July 3, 2024, due to World Trade Center illness. He was born on December 14, 1954, to Joseph and Elizabeth Tumulty in Queens, New York. Joseph was one of five children.

Joseph graduated from Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park, New York, and earned an associate degree from Farmingdale State College. He served as a firefighter with the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) for over 30 years, where he was assigned to Engine 55 and then later to

Settling in Lindenhurst, Joe raised a family with his wife, JoAnn. Taking time for family vacations were some of his favorite memories. Joseph enjoyed skiing, camping, hiking, spending time at the backyard pool, and watching the Mets.

Joe loved his retirement life of boating and fishing on the Great South Bay. He could always be seen tending to his garden and fixing things around the yard. Most of all, Joe loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He retired to be a grandpa, and he did a wonderful job filling his duty.

Joe was so proud to be a firefighter. He loved the job, the tradition and, most of all, the brotherhood. Serving the city wasn’t just a career for him; it was a calling. He believed deeply in the mission of the fire service—to help others, no matter the risk, no matter the hour.

This ceremony is a symbol to us. A symbol of courage, of duty, of love for the job. A reminder of the kind of man Joe was and the legacy he leaves behind in all of us.

Joseph is survived by his wife of 44 years, JoAnn; his children, Sean and Colleen; his son-in-law, Ryan; his daughter-in-law, Dawn; and his four beloved grandchildren, Madelyn, Thomas, Neil, and Cara.
