John Tiska, Jr.

John was a proud FDNY firefighter from 1989 until March 2005. He served in Engine Companies 212 and 229 in Brooklyn, New York. He worked doing fire suppression and recovery work at Ground Zero from September 13, 2001, until February 28, 2002. John was a very active supporter of the fire department organization “Fired Up for A Cure” until the day he died. The organization honored him with a plaque a few months prior to his death. On September 4, 2024, he was honored at FDNY Headquarters in Brooklyn, having his name placed on a plaque on the WTC Memorial Wall. Johnny loved his family and friends, especially his dog, “Probie.” He would bet you on almost everything, and he usually won. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a heart of gold. He adored spending time with his daughter, Nicole; sisters, Nancy and Sue; nephews, Michael, Steven, and Andrew; nieces, Jenna, Kaelyn, and Megan; and his girlfriend, Charlie. He was a diehard fan of the Mets and Jets. He loved music, especially Bruce Springsteen, Elvis, and Jimmy Buffet. Going to Jones Beach (Field 6), traveling, concerts, bowling, spending time with his friends, and going to sporting events made him very happy. At the age of 65, he succumbed to the many cancers he acquired from working “the pit” following 9/11. He is deeply missed!
