Lieutenant Commander, United States Navy, an action officer in the Office of Strategy and Concepts on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations.

He grew up at Los Gatos and then in Virginia, ran track at South Lakes High School in Reston, and took a degree in English at the Virginia Military Institute in 1991. He served aboard the Gunston Hall as electronic materials officer and navigator, with two Mediterranean deployments, took a master's in national security affairs at Monterey in 1996, and was operations officer aboard the Whidbey Island and then the Nashville.

He had just been selected to serve as an executive officer afloat.

He was a keen sportsman and golfer, and had lately run the SPUD triathlon and played in the Army-Navy Country Club championship.

He and his wife Sara had just marked their ninth anniversary, and were expecting their third child in April.
