His story

Yechezkel felt compelled to defend the South and fell in battle. His mother recounts that he was a beloved and handsome child whose charm was irresistible. The draft notice that arrived at the Razilov family was for elite units, but it was met with absolute refusal. 'To the Border Guard', the son informed the IDF authorities. After two years of devoted service in the mandatory army, Yechezkel underwent surgery that seemed like a verdict: discharge from the army and exemption from reserve duty. 'You did not accept the verdict', recounts Rachel, as if speaking to her son, 'You forcefully requested a combatant's certificate, and were positively answered. On Monday, two days after the war broke out, Yechezkel left his sister's house, under the pretense of needing to go home to shower, but his face was turned south.' His mother still managed to run after him: 'Wait, wait, where are you going? How can you go without a hug and a kiss?' She hugged him with all her might, kissed his neck, 'This hug and kiss, I will never forget. Thank you, God, for giving me this gift, to kiss and hug my son for the last time.'

October 7, 2023

It began at twenty past six in the morning with rocket fire and a coordinated crossing of the perimeter at some thirty points.

At the Nova music festival near Re'im, three hundred and sixty-four people were killed. Most were in their twenties. They had been dancing since before dawn and had nowhere to go across open ground.

In the kibbutzim and villages along the fence - Be'eri, Kfar Aza, Nir Oz, Nahal Oz, Holit and others - families were killed in their houses and their shelters. Be'eri lost about a tenth of its people.

About twelve hundred were killed in all, the large majority of them civilians, and two hundred and fifty-one people were taken into Gaza.

Among the dead were the volunteers and off-duty people who drove toward it without orders. Rachel Edri of Ofakim kept the men who held her and her husband talking for twenty hours, feeding them biscuits and coffee, until a rescue reached the house.

It was the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust, and Israel stopped.
