His story

As Leon heard the news of an infiltration of Hamas terrorists to Israeli territory on October 7th, he decided, before being called for duty, to head out of his home, with his private vehicle, to the southern region of Israel where battles with thousands of terrorists were taking place. That Saturday, Leon managed to evacuate dozens of wounded individuals to hospitals and to rescue dozens from the Nova music festival where Hamas terrorists massacred hundreds. The following day, Leon decided to return to help in the field and was joined by his son Omer, a discharged IDF combat solider. On the side of the road, Leon and Omer saw a police car that was riddled with bullets. Leon insisted on stopping and making sure there was no one in the car who needed help. When Leon and Omer got out of their vehicle, they were ambushed by a terrorist who shot at them, wounding Omer in both legs and hitting Leon who eventually succumbed to his wounds. Omer said: "My father is a hero. Brave, kind-hearted, hands of gold... He never stopped saying that this is his calling, that he cannot stand aside when he knows that there are people who need help."

It began at twenty past six in the morning with rocket fire and a coordinated crossing of the perimeter at some thirty points.

At the Nova music festival near Re'im, three hundred and sixty-four people were killed. Most were in their twenties. They had been dancing since before dawn and had nowhere to go across open ground.

In the kibbutzim and villages along the fence - Be'eri, Kfar Aza, Nir Oz, Nahal Oz, Holit and others - families were killed in their houses and their shelters. Be'eri lost about a tenth of its people.

About twelve hundred were killed in all, the large majority of them civilians, and two hundred and fifty-one people were taken into Gaza.

Among the dead were the volunteers and off-duty people who drove toward it without orders. Rachel Edri of Ofakim kept the men who held her and her husband talking for twenty hours, feeding them biscuits and coffee, until a rescue reached the house.

It was the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust, and Israel stopped.
