His story

"A man who combined sophistication and quick thinking outside the box, to the culmination of a lifetime at the time of his death, when he saved the lives of his daughters and granddaughter. Modi, a member of Kibbutz Kfar Aza in Israel, was at home with his two daughters and his granddaughter on Saturday the 7th of October. About an hour after the missile attack struck, they heard gunshots and Arabic speaking near the house, and understood that terrorists had entered the kibbutz. Modi, who had built a small shower room with a door inside the shelter; thought of a creative way to save his family, while sacrificing his life. Mody told his daughters and granddaughter to lock themselves in the shower room and stay quiet.
Mody then stood outside the shower, with his back to the shower door, so the shower room was not seen.
He assumed that the terrorists would enter the shelter, see an elderly man standing by the wall, shoot him and move on, not noticing that there is a shower room behind the man. That way his daughters and granddaughter would be saved.
And that is exactly what happened - the terrorists broke into the shelter, shot and killed Modi and moved on. His daughters and granddaughter spent 13 horrible hours in the shower, but survived to live a full life. In his life and death, Modi was an example for us all."

It began at twenty past six in the morning with rocket fire and a coordinated crossing of the perimeter at some thirty points.

At the Nova music festival near Re'im, three hundred and sixty-four people were killed. Most were in their twenties. They had been dancing since before dawn and had nowhere to go across open ground.

In the kibbutzim and villages along the fence - Be'eri, Kfar Aza, Nir Oz, Nahal Oz, Holit and others - families were killed in their houses and their shelters. Be'eri lost about a tenth of its people.

About twelve hundred were killed in all, the large majority of them civilians, and two hundred and fifty-one people were taken into Gaza.

Among the dead were the volunteers and off-duty people who drove toward it without orders. Rachel Edri of Ofakim kept the men who held her and her husband talking for twenty hours, feeding them biscuits and coffee, until a rescue reached the house.

It was the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust, and Israel stopped.
