His story

Adam “Puma” Brema, 47, a Sudanese asylum seeker, was murdered by Hamas terrorists in Sderot on October 7.

Originally from Darfur, Brema came to Israel around 15 years ago, fleeing his war-torn homeland after his father and uncle were killed.

He was buried in a Muslim ceremony on November 16 in Tel Aviv. According to media reports, his burial was delayed until his family could be tracked down, but without the ability to ship his body home, it was decided to bury him in Israel.

The African Refugee Development Center described Adam as “a big-hearted, generous man and a HIAS Israel volunteer who helped other asylum seekers like himself in Israel.”

According to the Davar newspaper, Brema had been living in Sderot for the past decade, working as a cleaner for the municipality and at the local mall. On October 7, he left his home when he heard gunshots to figure out what was going on and help if he could. He was shot dead by Hamas invaders on the street.

On Facebook, his friend Saleh Adam recounted seeing him less than a month before he was slain: “He told me about his longings to see his family and also his desire to come and study at the Sapir Academic College [in Sderot]. Sadly, he didn’t get to see his close family for close to two decades. Brema was a very beloved man among the asylum seekers in Sderot and also among many people in Sderot.”

His former girlfriend, Nana Yosef, told the news outlet that Brema “would help everyone, he had a pure heart… He really saved my life and many others. He would give those who needed help with all his heart.”

October 7, 2023

It began at twenty past six in the morning with rocket fire and a coordinated crossing of the perimeter at some thirty points.

At the Nova music festival near Re'im, three hundred and sixty-four people were killed. Most were in their twenties. They had been dancing since before dawn and had nowhere to go across open ground.

In the kibbutzim and villages along the fence - Be'eri, Kfar Aza, Nir Oz, Nahal Oz, Holit and others - families were killed in their houses and their shelters. Be'eri lost about a tenth of its people.

About twelve hundred were killed in all, the large majority of them civilians, and two hundred and fifty-one people were taken into Gaza.

Among the dead were the volunteers and off-duty people who drove toward it without orders. Rachel Edri of Ofakim kept the men who held her and her husband talking for twenty hours, feeding them biscuits and coffee, until a rescue reached the house.

It was the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust, and Israel stopped.
