Their life
Charles Butler Alexander Jr. was the son of Charles Butler Alexander Sr. and Margaret Sterrett Moss, of Cliffeholme in the Green Spring Valley of Maryland. He was a graduate of Princeton and a member of the Bachelors’ Cotillon. His brothers were Holmes Alexander and William Alexander.
In October 1935 he married Anita Marie-Louise Carroll at Oakdene, the Green Spring Valley home of her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Gordon Carroll. Anita was the daughter of Charles Bancroft Carroll Jr., of New York and Doughoregan Manor, and Anita Hack. Her mother was later Mrs. William Bleck of Paris. Anita was born on 10 July 1916 in Ellicott City, Maryland, and was educated in Paris. She and Charles had two children, Anita Carroll Alexander, who married Thomas Joseph Willett, and Charles Alexander Jr.
In the Second World War Charles went overseas from Maryland as a civilian ambulance driver. He was first attached to the British Army in Italy, and later to the French First Army. He had a narrow escape when his ambulance was riddled with shrapnel. He was later wounded by gunfire. French troops found him dead in a German hospital. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the French Croix de Guerre. A headstone for him stands in Saint Thomas Episcopal Church Cemetery, Owings Mills, Baltimore County, Maryland.
Anita died in 2009 in Owings Mills. After Charles’s death she married William O. Irvine Jr. in 1950. They had one child, Kathleen, and were divorced in October 1965 in Dade County, Florida.
