Their life
David Lardner was a war correspondent for the New Yorker magazine. | | He was killed while covering his first war assignment for the New Yorker magazine and less than one month after his arrival at the European Theater of war. | | Leaving Aachen, he was driving his jeep without headlights by night. One of the passengers, Russell Hill, also a correspondent, had suggested to take a shortcut. However, the road they took had just been cleard of mines and the engineers had piled the mines on the side of the road with the intent to pick them up the next morning. Because he was driving without headlights, he didn't notice this pile and struck it. Seven mines exploded. | | He was blown from the jeep and knocked unconscious. He died a few hours later in a hospital. David Lardner was the only one killed, making him the 20th U.S. correspondent killed in WWII of a total of 51.
