What Happened

Patrolman George Angeli was struck and killed by a drunk driver while investigating an accident on Curran Memorial Highway at approximately 11:15 p.m. The 16-year-old driver and five companions ran from the car after hitting Patrolman Angeli. He struck Patrolman Angeli so hard that his service revolver and holster were ripped from his belt and embedded in the car's fender. It was estimated that he was driving between 90 and 95 miles per hour. The driver was arrested and charged with drunk driving, reckless driving, and speeding. The driver was found delinquent of the traffic charges and fined $1,250.00, ordered to pay Patrolman Angeli's family $1,000.00, placed on three-year probation, and revoked his license for ten years. He was also left blind in one eye due to the collision. Patrolman Angeli was a U.S. Navy WWII veteran and had served with the North Adams Police Department for six years.

In tribute

I served 1985 to 1993. You served too, before the badge - different uniform, same idea. You go where you are sent and you do not get to pick the call.

Patrolman Angeli gave the North Adams Police Department 6 years.

Thank you for your service to the North Adams community, and for your service before it. Gone but never to be forgotten.

Rest easy, brother.

— S. Vincent Anthony, U.S. Army 1985-1993
