Deputy Sheriff Harland Bonner was shot and killed with his own weapon when he attempted to arrest a man wanted on a DUI warrant. Deputy Bonner and another officer spotted the suspect and began to pursue him. At one point, both officers lost sight of the suspect, but Deputy Bonner was able to locate the suspect. When Deputy Bonner confronted the suspect, the suspect was able to overpower him and gain control of his firearm. The suspect shot and killed Deputy Bonner. He then remained on the scene, where responding officers arrested him. Deputy Bonner was a U.S. Air Force veteran and served with the Morehouse Parish Sheriff's Department for 10 years.

I served 1985 to 1993. You served too, before the badge - different uniform, same idea. You go where you are sent and you do not get to pick the call.
Deputy Sheriff Bonner gave the Morehouse Parish Sheriff's Department 10 years.
Thank you for your service to the Bastrop community, and for your service before it. Gone but never to be forgotten.
Rest easy, brother.
— S. Vincent Anthony, U.S. Army 1985-1993
