Hugh Levon Butler served in the U.S. Army.
Patrolman Hugh Butler was shot and killed after he and his partner responded to a tavern at 3502 Troost Street to investigate a report of a man with a gun. When they arrived at the tavern, they were met with gunfire and exchanged fire with the gunman. Patrolman Butler was killed, his partner was wounded, and the gunman was seriously wounded. Four days later, it was determined that Patrolman Butler's partner had accidentally shot him. Patrolman Butler was a United States Army veteran and had served with the Kansas City Police Department for four years.

I served 1985 to 1993. You served too, before the badge - different uniform, same idea. You go where you are sent and you do not get to pick the call.
Patrolman Butler gave the Kansas City Police Department 4 years.
Thank you for your service to the Kansas City community, and for your service before it. Gone but never to be forgotten.
Rest easy, brother.
— S. Vincent Anthony, U.S. Army 1985-1993
