What Happened

Patrolman Frederick Anderson was struck and killed by a vehicle while investigating a stranded motorist on Route 58, just outside the borough limits at 2:35 am. While on a traffic stop, giving field sobriety tests to a driver, a vehicle approaching the scene struck and killed a pedestrian who was standing nearby. It then veered across the road and struck the rear of the cruiser, pushing it into the first violator vehicle. Patrolman Anderson pushed the first driver from between the cars moments before the impact, but he himself was unable to escape and was crushed between them. On December 29, the female driver of the vehicle pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and reckless driving. Patrolman Anderson was a U.S. Air Force veteran and had served with the Greenville/West Salem Police Department for three years. He was survived by his wife and six children. The "Frederick R. Anderson Street" was named in his honor in Greenville.

In tribute

I served 1985 to 1993. You served too, before the badge - different uniform, same idea. You go where you are sent and you do not get to pick the call.

Patrolman Anderson gave the Greenville / West Salem Police Department 3 years.

Thank you for your service to the Greenville community, and for your service before it. Gone but never to be forgotten.

Rest easy, brother.

— S. Vincent Anthony, U.S. Army 1985-1993
