What Happened

Sheriff Boyd Hall was shot and killed while attempting to negotiate with a suicidal man. Sheriff Hall was called to a ranch where a man had been drinking and was threatening suicide. Sheriff Hall asked the man to go inside and get another beer and to get him one in an attempt to calm him down. As he waited, the man shot through the window, hitting him in the heart area killing him instantly. Other officers at the scene returned fire, but it is believed the suspect killed himself. Sheriff Hall was a U.S. Navy veteran who had served as the Sheriff of the Teton County Sheriff's Office for two years and had previously served 11 years with the Wyoming Highway Patrol. He was survived by his wife, three children, three stepchildren, and two grandchildren. A shooting range in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, has been named after Boyd L. Hall in his memory.

In tribute

I served 1985 to 1993. You served too, before the badge - different uniform, same idea. You go where you are sent and you do not get to pick the call.

Sheriff Hall gave the Teton County Sheriff's Office 13 years.

Thank you for your service to the Jackson community, and for your service before it. Gone but never to be forgotten.

Rest easy, brother.

— S. Vincent Anthony, U.S. Army 1985-1993
