James Arvil Lamance served in the U.S. Navy for 3 years and 7 months. James served during the years of the Vietnam War and the Cold War.
Corporal Lamance and Reserve Officer Lamance (brothers) were pursuing a suspected drunk driver. Corporal Lamance had observed the suspect traveling at a high rate of speed and attempted to pull him over. During the pursuit, the suspect led the officers to an open field and stopped his vehicle approximately 100 yards from their patrol cruiser. The suspect then exited the vehicle and opened fire on the officers. Corporal Lamance was shot in the head and killed instantly.
