Lance Corporal David Bailey was killed in a vehicle crash while attempting to stop a car for speeding on I-85 in Greenville County, South Carolina.

Around 8:00 p.m., Corporal Bailey was attempting to catch up to the speeding vehicle when another car pulled in front of his patrol car one mile south of Woodruff Road.

He immediately attempted evasive action to avoid striking the second vehicle, causing his vehicle to skid. The patrol car exited the highway, went down an embankment, and hit a stand of trees. Corporal Bailey was pronounced dead at the scene.

Corporal Bailey was a National Guard veteran and had served with the South Carolina Highway Patrol for 6 years. His father also served with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

In tribute

I served 1985 to 1993. You served too, before the badge - different uniform, same idea. You go where you are sent and you do not get to pick the call.

Lance Corporal Bailey gave the South Carolina Highway Patrol 6 years.

Thank you for your service to the people of South Carolina. Thank you for your service before it. Gone but never to be forgotten.

Rest easy, brother.

— S. Vincent Anthony, U.S. Army 1985-1993
