What Happened

Patrolman Grover Wolf was shot and killed in the 700 block of Island Avenue after being confronted by a man he had dealt with earlier in the evening.

The subject had been drunk and was harassing a woman when Patrolman Wolf saw him and told him to go home. The man went home but returned to the area several hours later and located Patrolman Wolf.

The man confronted Patrolman Wolf, and a violent confrontation ensued in which Patrolman Wolf was shot. Despite being mortally wounded, Patrolman Wolf was able to return fire but did not strike the subject. The man fled the scene but was arrested a short time later and charged with murder. Patrolman Wolf was taken to Ohio Valley Hospital where he died later in the day.

The suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to life. He was granted a new trial, convicted of voluntary manslaughter, and sentenced to 6 to 12 years.

Patrolman Wolf was a U.S. Army veteran of WWI and had served with the McKees Rocks Police Department for one year.

He is buried at Mount Cavalry Cemetery in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania.

In tribute

I served 1985 to 1993. You served too, before the badge - different uniform, same idea. You go where you are sent and you do not get to pick the call.

Patrolman Wolf gave the McKees Rocks Borough Police Department 1 year.

Thank you for your service to the McKees Rocks community. Thank you for your service before it. Gone but never to be forgotten.

Rest easy, brother.

— S. Vincent Anthony, U.S. Army 1985-1993
