What Happened

Patrolman John Hopkins was shot in the abdomen and killed by another patrolman inside a cafe at 350 Tenth Avenue at 1:55 p.m., just after he finished lunch. The patrolman then shot and killed himself. The motive for the murder-suicide that happened at Louis Moller's Occidental Bar and Grill is unknown. However, witnesses said the patrolman who shot Patrolman Hopkins appeared inebriated and upset when Patrolman Hopkins refused to have a drink with him. Patrolman Hopkins, a military veteran, served 14 years in law enforcement and was assigned to the 14th Precinct.

In tribute

I served 1985 to 1993. You served too, before the badge - different uniform, same idea. You go where you are sent and you do not get to pick the call.

Patrolman Hopkins gave the New York City Police Department 14 years.

Thank you for your service to the New York community, and for your service before it. Gone but never to be forgotten.

Rest easy, brother.

— S. Vincent Anthony, U.S. Army 1985-1993
