Kevin P. McGuire.
Correction Counselor Kevin McGuire was killed in an automobile crash while transporting five prisoners from the Urbana Community Correctional Center to off-site job locations. His department van was struck from behind by a drunk driver on Cunningham Avenue, near I-74, in Urbana. The inmates, all of whom suffered extensive injuries, credited Correction Counselor McGuire's actions in attempting to avoid the crash for saving their lives. The 25-year-old driver of the truck was convicted of reckless homicide and received an eight-year sentence. Correction Counselor McGuire had served with the Illinois Department of Corrections for 11 years.

I served 1985 to 1993. You served too, before the badge - different uniform, same idea. You go where you are sent and you do not get to pick the call.
Correction Counselor McGuire gave the Illinois Department of Corrections 11 years.
Thank you for your service to the people of Illinois, and for your service before it. Gone but never to be forgotten.
Rest easy, brother.
— S. Vincent Anthony, U.S. Army 1985-1993
