John Edward Moore served in the U.S. Army.
Patrolman John Moore was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance at 655 Indiana Street (modern-day Martin Luther King Drive). Patrolman Moore had not yet started his shift for the day but heard the call on the radio and was nearby. The call involved a 15-year-old girl who was being attacked by her intoxicated uncle. Upon his arrival, he went to the back door of the home where he met the man in the basement stairwell and a gunbattle ensued. The suspect was shot and killed by Patrolman Moore, who was shot three times and died shortly after arriving at the hospital. Patrolman Moore had served with the Gary Police Department for 13 years. He was a US Army veteran of WWII and served as a military policeman.

I served 1985 to 1993. You served too, before the badge - different uniform, same idea. You go where you are sent and you do not get to pick the call.
Patrolman Moore gave the Gary Police Department 13 years.
Thank you for your service to the Gary community, and for your service before it. Gone but never to be forgotten.
Rest easy, brother.
— S. Vincent Anthony, U.S. Army 1985-1993
