Biography

Wilco was formed in Chicago in 1994 by the remaining members of the alt-country band Uncle Tupelo, with Jeff Tweedy at the forefront as the band's songwriter, vocalist, and driving force. Since then, they have evolved into something far larger and more indefinable than their initial origins would suggest. Their sound has moved from the country rock of the nineties to what can best be described as an eclectic indie rock band that touches on many eras and genres at once. Think layers upon layers of guitars, melancholic melodies, noise that suddenly bursts in and disappears again — music that is open and accessible, but never simple.

The highlight of their career is probably 2002's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot — an album that was initially rejected by the record company as not commercially viable, but which has since become one of the most important American rock albums of recent times. Top 40 Weekly Live, Wilco is a real band in the truest sense of the word — they play for at least two hours, put energy into every song, and sound as fresh as the first day. A core band for anyone who loves rock with substance and soul.

The Groove
Groove by decade

The Groove is music.nw’s own measure of renown — not an opinion, a fact computed from the record. It weighs reach (how many people engaged) against acclaim (how highly they rated it), balanced so a handful of votes can’t outshout a lasting favourite.

Computed the NeuraWeb way, across the whole record. The same yardstick for everyone — which is why the little-known can out-Groove the famous in their own corner.

The trajectory

How Wilco moved

Genre belongs to the record, not to the artist. Every album’s Groove is shared out across the genres it actually is — by how the raters tagged it — so nobody is 100% one thing. Stack that by decade and a career draws itself.
