Biography

Lev Markiz ( Moscow , 1930 ) is a Russian conductor who emigrated to the Netherlands . Markiz studied violin with Yuri Jankelevich and chamber music with Maria Joedina at the Moscow Conservatory . He then studied orchestral conducting with Kirill Kondrasjin . From 1955 to 1964 he was conductor of the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. Then he founded his own orchestra, the soloists of Moscow . With this ensemble he has made more than 70 recordings and provided many radio broadcasts. In addition, Markiz conducted a large number of symphony orchestras throughout the former Soviet Union . He collaborated with, among others, Sviatoslav Richter , David Oistrach and Emil Gilels . In 1981 Markiz emigrated to the Netherlands. He conducted a large number of leading orchestras in Europe, Canada and the United States and Israel. He was founder of the New Sinfonietta Amsterdam , of which he was the artistic director and chief conductor until Candida Thompson succeeded him in 1997. With New Sinfonietta he made tours to the United States, the Soviet Union, Germany, France and Italy. He performed many premieres of Russian composers with this ensemble and also composed specially for this ensemble. Markiz is chief conductor of the chamber orchestra I Virtuosi Italiani .
