A Split‐Second

A Split-Second is a Belgian electronic act formed in 1985. Originally a solo venture by Marc Ickx, the project evolved into a duo with the addition of Peter Bonne (Chrismar Chayell). They quickly became leaders of the Electronic Body Music (EBM) movement, signing with Antler Records and gaining international recognition via the American label Wax Trax! Records.

The band is perhaps most famous for their accidental role in pioneering the Belgian "New Beat" genre. In 1987, DJs at the Boccaccio club and Antwerp's USA Import record store began playing the 45 RPM 12-inch of their track "Flesh" at 33 RPM with the pitch slider set to +8. This "wrong speed" playback transformed the song into a slow, heavy, hypnotic dance track, creating the blueprint for the New Beat sound that would sweep across Europe. Throughout the late 80s and early 90s, the band toured extensively in the United States and achieved Billboard Dance Chart success with singles like "Mambo Witch" and "The Parallax View.

" While their later work, such as the 1990 album Kiss of Fury, integrated more guitar-driven elements, they remain icons of the Belgian electronic scene. Their influence persists today, with "Flesh" being remixed by major electronic artists like Paul Oakenfold.
