Incident
Deputy Sheriff Jesse Fulton was shot and killed while attempting to make an arrest in Hammond.
Deputy Fulton was waiting for suspected bootleggers. While arresting one man, another man shot him before fleeing.
The suspect fled the area after the murder. He was apprehended two years later in North Carolina after turning himself in to authorities. He was sentenced to 21 years in prison, but the sentence was commuted to ten years. In 1932, he was pardoned after "valuable services rendered" in the reformatory fire on July 2, 1930.
