Incident

Jason Rivera was a police officer in the 32 Precinct in Harlem. He had served the department for 14 months. He was a keen runner and baseball player.

On 21 January 2022, Police Officers Jason Rivera, Wilbert Mora and Sumit Sulan of the 32 Precinct answered a domestic violence call on 135th Street in Harlem, made by a woman who was fighting with one of her two adult sons. Inside the apartment, while the mother and one son were being questioned, Officers Rivera and Mora walked down a hallway at about 6:15 p.m. to find the other son. Lashawn McNeil, 47, stepped out of a bedroom and opened fire, striking both officers. Officer Mora fired one shot before he fell, and Officer Sulan fired and stopped the gunman. McNeil, who also had an assault rifle in his room in addition to his 9mm handgun, was arrested and later died in the hospital.

Officer Rivera was taken to Harlem Hospital, where he died shortly afterward. He was 22 years old. His partner, Officer Mora, died of his wounds four days later.

Officer Rivera's funeral was held at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan, and there, on 28 January 2022, he was posthumously promoted to detective first grade. He was survived by his wife of three months, Dominique, his childhood sweetheart, who delivered a eulogy at the funeral, and by his parents and his brother.
