Incident

Russel Timoshenko had been out of the Police Academy for just one year. He was first assigned to the 70 Precinct and then transferred to the 71 Precinct. He was athletic and enjoyed lifting weights, among other sports.

At about 2:30 a.m. on 9 July 2007, in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, Officer Timoshenko and his partner, Officer Herman Yan, noticed that the license plate on a black BMW SUV had been reported stolen. The vehicle was stolen, and the three men inside, Lee Woods, Dexter Bostic and Robert Ellis, all had violent criminal records. The officers ordered the car to pull over. As they approached it, the men opened fire. Officer Timoshenko was struck in the head, neck, mouth and nose and fell at once. Officer Yan was hit in the chest and left arm but fired at the fleeing car before he collapsed; the plate in his protective vest absorbed much of the gunfire.

Detectives from the 71 Squad who were nearby on another case arrived within seconds. Seeing that he could not wait for an ambulance, they put Officer Timoshenko in their car and rushed him to Kings County Hospital, where he was placed on life support, paralyzed and unable to breathe on his own. After an intense manhunt, the two gunmen who had fled were caught within days in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania. Officer Timoshenko died on 14 July 2007 without regaining consciousness, and all three men were then charged with first-degree murder.

At his funeral in July 2007, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly announced that he had been posthumously promoted to Detective First Grade.
