Incident

Anastasios Tsakos, known as Tasso, was a police officer with Highway Patrol Unit #3, assigned to the Accident Collision Squad. Over 14 years with the department he made more than 200 arrests, took only three sick days and testified for victims in court on his own time.

During the overnight shift on 27 April 2021, Officer Tsakos was securing the scene of an earlier fatal crash on the Long Island Expressway. At about 2:00 a.m., while he stood beside his marked patrol car, he was struck by a 2013 Volkswagen driven by an intoxicated driver whose license was suspended. The driver fled but was chased down and arrested by NYPD officers. Officer Tsakos died later at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in Queens. He was 43 years old.

The driver, Jessica Beauvais, had twice the legal limit of alcohol in her system and admitted smoking marijuana before driving. Her trial in Queens Supreme Court began on 9 August 2022, and on 31 October 2023 a jury found her guilty on all counts, including manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, reckless endangerment, driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a fatal incident. Sentencing was set for 14 December 2023.

Thousands of mourners attended his funeral at the Saint Paraskevi Greek Orthodox Shrine Church in Suffolk County, where his widow, Irene, delivered a eulogy. At the funeral he was posthumously promoted to detective first grade and given gold shield 9005.

Survivors

He is survived by his wife, 6-year-old daughter, and 3-year-old son.
