Incident

Peter J. Figoski was a long-serving police officer in the 75th Precinct in Brooklyn and the devoted father of four teenage daughters, who were living with him at the time of his death.

Early on Monday, 12 December 2011, Officer Figoski and his partner, Officer Glenn Estrada, were backing up other officers on a 911 call reporting a robbery in progress in a basement apartment at 25 Pine Street in the Cypress Hills section of Brooklyn. While the other officers questioned the victim inside, some of the robbers were still in the building. At about 2:30 a.m., one of them tried to escape and came upon Officer Figoski near the stairwell between the front door and the basement. The man pulled a semi-automatic handgun and shot him in the face at close range. The bullet entered under his left eye, passed through his neck and exited the back of his head.

Outside, Officer Estrada was struggling with another suspect when he heard the shot. He let that man go and chased the gunman, 27-year-old Lamont Pride, for several blocks before catching him near Chestnut and Fulton Streets. Investigators said the robbery had been planned against a small-time marijuana dealer, and that Pride was wanted in a shooting in North Carolina and had already served time there for robbery.

Officer Figoski was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he died at about 7:15 that morning. He was 47 years old. Within two weeks, a scholarship fund set up for his four daughters raised more than $1.3 million for their education.

He was posthumously promoted to Detective First Grade.
