What Happened

Firefighter of the Fire Department of the City of New York, who died of an illness from the rescue and recovery at the World Trade Center. The department added the name to its World Trade Center Memorial Wall at the ceremony of 06 September 2023. He died on 03 July 2022, aged 71.

Biography

Another member of the FDNY family lost his battle to a 9/11-related illness on July 3, 2022. Firefighter Richard C. Toshack, affectionately known as “Shacks” by those who knew him best, served the people of New York City with courage, dedication, and heart. Born to William and Dorothy Toshack in Bay Shore, Long Island, on May 9, 1951, Richard was a proud graduate of Saint Patrick’s School and Bay Shore High School. He joined the FDNY in 1981 and was assigned to Engine 307/Ladder 154 in Jackson Heights, Queens, where he would remain for the entirety of his 21-year career. It was more than just a firehouse; it was his second home, his extended family. Richard responded to the call on September 11, 2001, and served in the rescue and recovery efforts that followed. His illness was a direct result of that selfless service. A devoted husband to Jo and a proud father to Allyson, Richard was a straight shooter with a wicked sense of humor. His word was his bond, and his presence filled every room. To meet him was to remember him. He was one of a kind. He loved the water and spent time nearly every summer of his life in Lake George, surrounded by lifelong friends. In the winter, he traded swimsuits for skis, enjoying the snow just as much as the sand. But it was in his garden, among the plants and peace, that he found his greatest joy. It’s there that his spirit lingers, and in his honor, we now plant.

Richard Toshack was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He is deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His legacy lives on in laughter, in honesty, and in the simple beauty of a well-tended garden. He is deeply missed by his family, friends, and fellow firefighters in the FDNY. Rest easy, Shacks.
