Michael Verzi

What Happened

Firefighter of the Fire Department of the City of New York, who died of an illness from the rescue and recovery at the World Trade Center. The department added the name to its World Trade Center Memorial Wall at the ceremony of 14 September 2022. He died on 28 May 2022, aged 67.

Biography

Michael Verzi was born on May 13, 1955, in the Bronx, New York. A dedicated and courageous firefighter, Michael proudly served with the FDNY at Engine 97 in the Bronx for 25 years, until his retirement in 2010. He was a true public servant whose love for the job never faded. He missed the firehouse and his brothers in service every single day after retiring. Michael passed away on May 28, 2022, from a 9/11-related illness, a testament to the sacrifice he made in the line of duty during one of our nation’s darkest times. His bravery and commitment will never be forgotten. On September 20, 1986, Michael married his soulmate, Denise Verzi. Together, they built a beautiful life, raising three daughters, Alexa, Michaela, and Aria. He was the epitome of a loving and devoted “girl dad,” always making time for his daughters and cherishing every moment with them. He was also a caring and loving father-in- law to Kevin Hughes and Chris Robles, and would have loved his future son-in-law, Tommy Lopez. Though he passed just one month before the birth of his first granddaughter, Layla, his presence will be felt in her life and in the lives of all his future grandchildren. He would have been the most loving and joyful “Papa.” Michael was an avid fan of the New York Rangers, Yankees, and Giants. He found joy in the outdoors—whether hunting, relaxing on the family’s pontoon boat, or traveling the world with Denise. Together, they explored places like Italy, Aruba, Mexico, Alaska, New Zealand, and Australia, checking off adventures from a long and well-lived list.

He and Denise made homes filled with love and laughter in Yonkers, New York; Salisbury Mills, New York; and

finally in New Milford, Connecticut.

Michael Verzi was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, brother, uncle, and friend. His bright smile lit up every room he entered, and his kindness, strength, and love left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He loved life deeply, and he is deeply loved and missed in return.
