What Happened

Firefighter of the Fire Department of the City of New York, who died of an illness from the rescue and recovery at the World Trade Center. The department added the name to its World Trade Center Memorial Wall at the ceremony of 09 September 2020. He died on 22 May 2018, aged 56.

Biography

On May 22, 2018, the FDNY mourned the loss of another cherished member of service, Firefighter James J. Hurson, whose passing was due to the illnesses and injuries sustained during the rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center on 9/11. Born on August 11, 1961, and a proud graduate of Kings Park High School, James answered the call to serve his city when he joined the FDNY in October 1993. He was assigned to Engine 318/Ladder166, Coney Island’s “Kings of Neptune,” where he served with courage, skill, and unwavering dedication until his retirement in October 2005. Being a firefighter was not just a profession for James; it was a calling and one of his greatest sources of pride in life. James was an intelligent, warm-hearted man with a lifelong passion for antique cars and motorcycles. From a young age, he could identify the make and model of a car simply by the sound of its engine. He delighted in watching automotive shows and auctions, keeping meticulous notes on anything that caught his interest. Beyond his service, James will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father, uncle, and friend. His smile could brighten any room, and his one-of-a-kind sense of humor left an enduring mark on all who knew him. His legacy is one of service, love, and loyalty—qualities that will live on in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have called him family or friend. Take care, brush your hair. – James Hurson
