What Happened

Firefighter of the Fire Department of the City of New York, who died of an illness from the rescue and recovery at the World Trade Center. The department added the name to its World Trade Center Memorial Wall at the ceremony of 04 September 2024. He died on 02 April 2024, aged 76.

Biography

Frank A. Caputo was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and proud New Yorker whose life was defined by service, sacrifice, and love for his family and community. Born on August 22, 1947, in the Bronx, New York, to Frank and Rose Caputo, Frank grew up in a close-knit family and attended DeWitt Clinton High School. In 1968, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving honorably during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home, Frank briefly worked for the New York City Sanitation Department before pursuing his true calling—becoming a firefighter. On March 6, 1971, Frank was appointed to the FDNY and assigned to Engine 68 in the Bronx, where he served with courage and dedication for over 31 years. He retired on September 12, 2002, after a long and decorated career. Frank was among the many brave firefighters who responded to the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001, and his work in the rescue and recovery efforts would later impact his health. In 1974, Frank married the love of his life, Theresa, and the couple settled in Yonkers, New York, where they built a beautiful life together. They raised two sons, Frank Jr. and Paul, and later became proud grandparents to Logan, Mia, Nicholas, and Leo. Family was at the heart of everything Frank did, and he cherished every moment spent with his loved ones. Beyond his work as a firefighter, Frank was a beloved member of the Colonial Heights community in Yonkers. He served on the board of the neighborhood association (CHAT) and was known for his warmth, generosity, and sense of humor. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling with Theresa, relaxing with friends, and spending time with his grandchildren, who adored him. Frank passed away on April 2, 2024, from an illness related to his service during the 9/11 response. He is remembered as a hero, a dedicated public servant, and a man whose love for his family and community left a lasting legacy.
