Christopher D. Scalone

What Happened

Battalion Chief of the Fire Department of the City of New York, who died of an illness from the rescue and recovery at the World Trade Center. The department added the name to its World Trade Center Memorial Wall at the ceremony of 04 September 2024. He died on 13 November 2023, aged 65.

Biography

Christopher Scalone was born to Robert and Dorothy Scalone on September 20, 1958. His father was an FDNY battalion chief, so it was no surprise when Chris decided to follow in his dad’s footsteps. Chris’s early years were lived in Babylon until the family moved out to Port Jefferson Station in 1966. When his parents retired to Florida in the mid-80s, Chris took ownership of the house, where he lived with his wife, Victoria, until his death in 2023. Chris came on the job on January 10, 1981. His first company was Engine 332. He worked and studied very hard, and on April 4, 1988, he was promoted to lieutenant. Chris continued to excel in climbing up the proverbial ladder, working in various areas of the city. On March 13, 2004, he was promoted to battalion chief. On September 11th, he rushed into the towers without hesitation. He spent three months down there, which ultimately cost him his life. Sadly, he developed cancer and passed on November 13, 2023. He left his mark everywhere he worked with the men who served under his command, as well as his fellow officers. He was well respected and loved by all who knew him. In fact, the FDNY had the street in front of the 53 Battalion, where he last worked, dedicated to him as Christopher Scalone Way. In addition to that, the Town of Brookhaven dedicated the street where he lived, Groton Drive, to him. Chris was an avid fisherman ever since he was old enough to fish. Being out on his boat on the Long Island Sound was truly his happy place. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Victoria, and a loving father to their daughter, Tiffany, who tragically passed in 2008 due to pulmonary hypertension. He was also a loving son to his parents, as well as a loving brother to his sister, Deb, and loving

uncle to his nephew, Doug. He will forever be missed.
