Biography
After 18 years of service, Detective Jason “JJ” Vetter died by suicide on October 2, 2017 at the age of 39. JJ graduated from West Bend East High School in 1996 and at the University of Wisconsin-Washington County two years later. At the time of his death, he was with the Milwaukee Police Department. Prior to that, he had worked with Washington County and Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Departments. JJ loved his job, but it took a toll on him. He spent several years in the Sensit ive Crimes Division, where he primarily investigated sexual assaults and other crimes against vulnerable victims (children, elderly, etc.). He had an especially difficult time when young children were involved. Mostly, his time as a detective was a dream of his and he loved his fellow officers. He played softball and enjoyed fishing on Lake Michigan. After his parents moved to Florida, JJ became buddies with his Grandpa Al, who was also a detective with the West Allis Police Dept. Several times a month, they would play bingo at the local casino and some slot play after, or just go out to eat. Grandpa’s passing was very hard on him; getting him to smile became a challenge. His time with his nieces and nephew was guaranteed to cheer him up.
