Incident
Private John Moran died as a result of complications from influenza while performing his assigned duties during the Influenza Pandemic.
The Texas Rangers were required to maintain order and enforce quarantine laws in force throughout the state. John A. Moran enlisted in Company A of the Texas Rangers on November 1, 1918, and was assigned to the Ranger camp at Alice in Jim Wells County. He contracted influenza while on duty in Falfurrias in Brooks County and died 18 days later.
He was buried in the Crosby Cemetery in Mason County.

Private John August Moran died on December 12, 1918 of influenza contracted in the line of duty. He was 32.

The influenza pandemic of 1918 killed more people worldwide than the war that preceded it. Police officers worked it without vaccines, without antibiotics, and often without masks, enforcing quarantines, transporting the sick, and standing posts in cities where the dead outpaced the undertakers.
They caught it doing the job. There was no treatment to give them.
