Deputy Clendennen was shot and killed as he and posse members attempted to arrest a suspect for burning the Limestone County Courthouse. The fire destroyed all the county’s current and historical records. The suspect fled from his residence firing at the officers as he exited. Deputy Sheriff Clendennen was shot fatally and died at the scene. One of the posse members were shot in the back but survived his injuries.
