Patrolman Alfred Thomason was killed in an automobile crash at the entrance to the Shaw Airfield Air Force Base in Sumter County at 4:40 pm. Patrolman Thomason was a United States Army veteran and served with the South Carolina Highway Patrol for two years.

He was survived by his parents, two brothers, and a sister.
