Railroad Detective S.W. Everson was killed when he was thrown from a fast-moving train near Bell Buckle, Tennessee, when he attempted to break up a fight involving members of a group of workmen on their way to Shelbyville.
Three men were arrested and charged with his murder.
One week later, at the conclusion of their preliminary hearing, a mob of twenty men opened fire on the suspects as they were being escorted by deputies from the Bedford County Courthouse in Shelbyville. One suspect was killed and the other two were badly wounded.
My Uncle is why I become a committed person to the Officer Down Page. He was only in his 40. So proud to wear the Blue Uniform. His death caused a spiral of finances for Aunt and her 4 younger children. Gun fire back them was using larger bullets. I remember going to funeral, I had never seen so many Officers cars from all over to honor his passing. The lasting word at funeral was, "my uncle did not ever run from violence but would always put his life first", that day he lost his life. God Bless the Men and Women who server in Sheriff or Officer units.
