Patrolman James Cavanaugh succumbed to injuries sustained several weeks earlier when his horse slipped on ice, throwing him to the ground on Manton Avenue.
Patrolman Cavanaugh was assigned to the Mounted Command and had served with the Providence Police Department for nine years.
