The suspect fled the scene but later committed suicide in a nearby field. Patrolman McDonough was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and had served with the Pittsburgh Police Department for 15 years. He had previously played for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Chicago Cardinals in the National Football League. Tributes

I served 1985 to 1993. You served too, before the badge - different uniform, same idea. You go where you are sent and you do not get to pick the call.
Patrolman McDonough gave the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police 15 years.
Thank you for your service. Gone but never to be forgotten.
Rest easy, brother.
