Incident

Policeman Steward was shot and killed by three robbers who were holding up the Freihofer Baking Company at Limekiln Pike and Washington Lane. A civilian was also shot and killed. Despite being wounded, he advanced on the armed thieves and was shot three more times. The next night a running gun battle resulted when officers tried to arrest one of the suspects, age 17. The suspect was taken into custody when he was shot in the leg. When questioned, he squealed on his two companions, 18 and 20, because he said they did not give him the correct amount of money from several armed robberies they committed. When officers went to a house where the two were hiding a gun battle resulted. The 20-year-old was shot and killed and the other suspect was shot in his right leg several times. Policeman Steward was a U.S. Army veteran of the Spanish-American war and had served with the Philadelphia Police Department for 14 years.

He was survived by his wife and seven children.
