Incident
Trooper Scott Lyons and Sergeant James Rector were killed in a vehicle crash on Crescent Cuttoff Road in Gilchrist. At 6:00 p.m., the two officers were assisting another officer at the scene of an accident involving a drunk driver when their marked SUV was struck by a wood-chipping truck. They were both pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck was not injured. Trooper Lyons had served with the Oregon State Police for only two years. He is survived by his parents and sister. His father also served with the Oregon State Police.
