Incident
Patrolman Fred Liebler died as a result of complications of influenza while manning an ambulance during the epidemic.
He had taken several victims to the hospital when he contracted the flu. He was taken to St. Alexis Hospital, where he died as a result of complications four days later.
Patrolman Liebler was assigned to the 6th Police District and was survived by his wife.

Patrolman Frederick Henry Liebler died on October 29, 1918 of influenza contracted in the line of duty. He was 34.

The influenza pandemic of 1918 killed more people worldwide than the war that preceded it. Police officers worked it without vaccines, without antibiotics, and often without masks, enforcing quarantines, transporting the sick, and standing posts in cities where the dead outpaced the undertakers.
They caught it doing the job. There was no treatment to give them.
