Biography

Tonight, we honor the service of Chief Brian Hatfield who died by suicide on November 30, 2021, after 25 years of service at the age of 59. My Dad’s passion was a retired police Charger that he turned into an honor car. Dad named the car USA1 and had the slogan “Remember the Fallen”. He used that slogan because he said “I was supposed to be one of the fallen” after an attempt on his life due to his undercover work. He went to every police officer’s funeral in Ohio with his car and, with the permission of the family, added their names, badge number, and department to the car. He continuously checked with the families to remind them they will never be forgotten. Dad was in the Ohio National Guard and in the US Army before he entered law enforcement. He was a decorated Police Chief and received multiple awards for Officer of the Year from the Ohio Senate as well as outstanding service from the FBI for catching a bank robber. I’d like to think he was the unofficial PR person for our local departments, he wanted to bridge the gap between the community and the police. My dad tried to find the good in everyone and treated others how he wanted to be treated. He loved being a Police Officer. About a year before he died, he started raising awareness for PTSD in Law Enforcement and was on the news for being part of a study at the University of Ohio State. He suffered from PTS and had survivor’s guilt over multiple incidents and losses.
