Incident

Patrolman Walter Boyle was shot and killed by a man he was attempting to serve a warrant on for beating his wife at 619 Elmore Street. The suspect ran from his home when officers arrived. He turned and shot Patrolman Boyle four times as the officer pursued him. A short time later, 50 officers cornered the suspect in a garage. When they fired tear gas shells, he shot at them, and they responded with shotgun fire, killing him instantly. Patrolman Boyle had served with the Toledo Police Department for three years. He was survived by his wife and three brothers. The brothers also served with the Toledo Police Department.
