Incident

Sheriff Mark Wildes was shot and killed while attempting to arrest the son of a wealthy rancher for evading the draft. The suspect fled but was tracked by an Indian tracker and shot and killed. Sheriff Wildes, who took office in January 1917, was still in his first two-year term when he was murdered.

He was survived by his wife.
