Incident
Officer Wayne Stedman was killed when his department vehicle was struck by a dump truck on State Road 44 (modern-day Route 544) one mile north of the city. He had been assisting at the scene of a medical emergency when the ambulance crew asked him to return to town to retrieve additional equipment. He was pulling onto the highway when his patrol car collided with the truck. Officer Stedman had served with the Bloomfield Police Department for 2-1/2 years.
Survivors
He was survived by his wife and young son.
