Incident

Patrolman Nicholas Nester was killed in a fire while attempting to rescue several victims at 813 Ocean Avenue. He had carried several women and children to safety and then re-entered the building to ensure everyone had made it out. He was overcome by smoke after re-entering the building. His body was located underneath a sofa on the top floor. Patrolman Nicholas was the youngest serving officer with the Jersey City Police Department at the time of his death.

Survivors

He had served with the agency for only 10 months and was survived by his parents.
