Biography

Don was a Lieutenant with the Greensboro Police Department and had served for 26 years. He was two months from retirement. He held a degree in music from the University of Virginia and was the last person anyone would think to be a police officer but the first person all would go to as a police officer for advice, information, and mentoring. Donald moved up quickly, earning various ranks, yet remained humble and kind, serving his community and fellow Brothers in Blue. Donald and I have one daughter together, Sarah Madalyn Webb, who is completing her junior year at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in Charlotte, NC. She is a double major in Business and Performance Dance and plans to open her own dance studio one day, in his name. It will be called DCW Dance Company. Though divorced, Donald and I remained very good friends and were the poster children of what a divorced couple should look like. If you didn’t know we were divorced, you wouldn’t know. That is how well we were able to preserve the very bond that brought us together in the first place, the bond of friendship. I was on the phone with Don when he took his life and this was something none of us ever saw coming. Don was not only a leader within the department but was an avid member of the church choir. He was a former member of the Virginia Gentleman and The Virginia Glee Club, still coming together for reunions and moving so many with his voice and love for music. He loved Sarah Madalyn fiercely and would move whatever mountain he needed to, to ensure her happiness. He instilled in her so many of the same leadership qualities he possessed that as her mother, I have no doubt, she will carry on his legacy in her own leadership and guidance of youth within her dance studio. Don Webb is missed terribly. His pain has become our pain and the “whys” remain unanswered. However, we find comfort that he is no longer in pain, whatever pain drove him to feel there was no other way. We would love to have his name placed on the memorial wall. While I know there are too many to count, hopefully having one more name will show the world police and first responder suicide is a real problem and there is help available.
