Incident
Deputy Sheriff Sypraseuth Phouangphrachanh died as the result of complications after contracting COVID-19 while on duty as a school resource officer. Deputy Phouangphrachanh contracted the virus at the beginning of a small outbreak of the virus affecting school employees.
Deputy Phouangphrachanh had served with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office for 14 years and was assigned as the school resource officer for the county's middle schools and high schools. He had previously served with the Candor Police Department.
COVID-19 and Law Enforcement
Deputy Sheriff Sypraseuth "Bud" Phouangphrachanh died on March 31, 2020 of COVID-19 contracted in the line of duty. He was 43.

Beginning in early 2020, law enforcement officers across the country contracted COVID-19 in the course of their duties. While much of the nation sheltered at home, they kept answering calls, making arrests, transporting prisoners, and working face to face with the public. There was no distance to be had from the job.
Corrections officers were hit hardest. Confined facilities and large populations meant constant, close, unavoidable exposure.

He is survived by his wife, five children, parents, and two brothers.
